H&S will build the first industrial scale plant to recycle end-of-life mattresses into polyols.

The first industrial scale unit to recycle end-of-life mattresses into polyols.

Sulingen – June 10th, 2020 H&S Anlagentechnik GmbH – H&S has signed a contract with an independent French chemical company - Orrion Chemicals Orgaform - for the supply of an industrial scale reactor unit and process know-how to recycle end-of-life (EoL) mattresses. The declared goal is to convert polyurethane (PU) waste arising from EoL mattresses into high-quality recovered polyols suitable for application in rigid and flexible PU products without compromising their quality; this will contribute to the reduction in landfill and incineration streams significantly and is aligned to the goals of EU waste regulation to recycle 65% of municipal waste by 2030. The first unit is targeting to reclaim polyols out of mattresses, which are being discarded each year in a million-inhabitant city and will become the first in Europe.

After the successful introduction of industrial scale PU recycling projects for the conversion of production scrap into polyols in Poland and China, H&S continued working on developing their technologies and equipment for EoL polyurethanes recycling. Since 2017 H&S has been collaborating with Dow Europe with the target to implement EoL recycling solutions for PU products. Being a part of the Dow’s RENUVA™ Mattress Recycling Program, the project with Orrion Chemicals Orgaform has become a fruitful result of this collaboration.

“This project is reinforcing Orrion Chemicals Orgaform’s commitment to sustainable development,” said Christian Siest, president - Orrion Chemicals Orgaform. “We are proud to build an industrial scale production unit for recycling end-of-life foam. This is a major investment that fits the growth strategy of our company,” he added.

“In times when everyone is working hard on evolving a sustainable approach in the polyurethane industry, we are glad to break new ground and put into practice an innovative solution addressing the challenges of EoL mattresses recycling with a real project, which will definitely transform the vison of future PU waste treatment and raw materials recovery,”  pointed out Mila Skokova, Product & Sales Manager - H&S Anlagentechnik.

The start-up of the recycling plant is scheduled for the first half of 2021.
